Logline

A young boy talented to play the violin is entering the exciting and lurking nightlife of gigs with a gipsy band. As the night goes by, the gig is getting out of control.

Synopsis

Elderly musician and pub owner Almir (67) meets a talented young boy who is competing at the audition for a gig with a gipsy band. Hearing him play the violin, Almir’s thoughts are drawn back in time to when he was a young boy entering the world of gipsy band gigs, exciting and lurking nightlife. As the night goes by, the private celebration at the pub is getting out of control, ready to explode. Unexpectedly, the boy gets into the hotspot. Almir, feeling ready to retire, gets the insight into the circle of life, figuring out that so much has changed over the years, but not all. Some things are, unfortunately, still the same.

Director’s Statement

I met a young musician who told me how he participated in the audition for a gig with a gipsy band. They played together, and he got a lot of tips, but at the end of the night, he was devastated as he walked out with only a modest wage. According to the unwritten rule, the organizers took the large cut. This story inspired me, to learn more about gipsy bands (which are very popular in the Balkan) and their world behind the scene. Besides the public appearance, where everything seems to go smooth, underneath, there is an intriguing system of organization of gigs, some loose – some rigid rules for members of bands… The whole new world of music as art with a soul and as art for money. A cruel world for musicians, especially young, on one hand, and on the other, a world of authentic music scene where artists create masterpieces beyond all canons of official music.
