Tanja finds the money to pay off her senile father’s gambling debt only to realize that the money is not hers to keep.
Synopsis
TANJA (37) lives with her senile FATHER (73), a gambling addict who amassed twenty-thousand euro debt with a loan shark ENVOY literally sitting in front of the apartment until the debt is settled. One night Tanja returns from jogging and tells the Envoy, Father and her Sister over the phone that she found the money.
According to her story, she went to buy a soda with a sweepstake on it, and it was a winning one.
After she put her Father to sleep, she dozes off in front of the TV featuring late news. There was a stabbing, and the person barely survived. This prompts Tanja to go to the police, where she admits she is the person who found the man and called the ambulance. Believing he was dead, Tanja left the scene early. Now, she wants to visit him in the hospital.
Tanja goes to the hospital and learns that the man has lost his leg due to bleeding. MAN’S FATHER is watching his son in the intensive care. Tanja comes and tells him she was the one to call for help. Man’s Father hugs her. However, that is not the only reason she came. Tanja takes out the cork, and hands it to
Man’s Father revealing it belonged to his son before she snatched it from him.
Director’s Statement
Though a sequel to my previous short film, ‘Finders (not) keepers’ is very much different in a sense that it is character driven and focuses solely on Tanja and the events unfolding in the course of one night. What intrigued me is a strong conflict she finds herself suddenly in, and gravity of burden and decision she has to make. To help herself and her family in an unjust way, or to do a morally right thing but maintain her life struggle.
An unusual situation from which she can get out scot-free is unlikely to happen to most of us, but if did – what would you do? This is the question I would like to ask the audience with this short film.
Visually, film will maintain somber atmosphere of dark primary colors of background that allow only Tanja to stand out in her jogging costume. This will establish her as a character who runs the story, but also a character who changes throughout. I plan to use very little music, perhaps only toward the end of the film. Until then, foley will create atmosphere and build tension, especially in the intensive care unit scene.
